Project Overview
Son of Kite is a kitesurfing school and gear shop based at Le Morne, Mauritius – one of the world’s most iconic kitesurfing spots. The brief was to build a high-performance WooCommerce storefront that could match the premium, sun-soaked identity of the brand while handling a serious product catalogue, seasonal traffic spikes, and a global audience of kitesurfers.
The Challenge
The existing online presence didn’t reflect the quality and reputation Son of Kite had built on the water. The shop needed to feel aspirational – the kind of place where someone scrolling through at 11pm would get pulled in and want to buy – while remaining fast, functional, and easy to manage for a small team running a school and shop simultaneously in a remote island location. On the technical side, the site needed to be resilient: running on a containerised stack, served to an international audience, and capable of handling bursts of traffic without degrading the experience.
Design
The visual identity was built around what I call Premium Lagoon Minimalism – a design language that draws from the transparency of lagoon water, the geometry of kite lines, and the raw energy of wind and ocean. Clean white space, a restrained colour palette anchored by deep ocean tones, and typography that breathes. Every UI decision was deliberately minimal: let the product imagery do the heavy lifting, remove friction from the path to purchase.
The design system was built from the ground up using CSS custom properties as design tokens, BEM methodology for all component naming, and fluid sizing throughout with clamp() and relative units (rem/em). The result is a layout that scales naturally across device sizes without relying on a cascade of breakpoints.
Development
The front-end was built entirely in Bricks Builder, leveraging its query loop and dynamic data capabilities for product listings, category pages, and custom WooCommerce templates. Custom CSS was written to strict standards: no magic numbers, no pixel-based sizing, no bloat.
The stack runs on FlyWP with Docker, giving full control over the server environment. PHP-FPM was tuned for performance, Redis was integrated for object caching, and Cloudflare sits in front of the whole setup for CDN, caching, and security. When the site came under pressure from aggressive bot crawling, custom WAF rules were deployed at the Cloudflare level to protect server resources without impacting legitimate traffic.
Several custom WordPress plugins were developed specifically for this project to streamline the product management workflow, allowing the team to assign featured images to multiple products in one operation rather than product by product, make the products catalog easy to manage and sync with Google Merchant.
Product data, including supplier catalogues from major kite brands, was processed through a structured multi-stage wrangling pipeline (Excel → cleaned CSV → WooCommerce-ready import format), transforming raw supplier data into properly structured products with attributes, categories, and pricing ready for import.
Integrations & Ecosystem
- WooCommerce for full e-commerce functionality (products, variations, cart, checkout)
- Redis object cache for database query performance
- Cloudflare for CDN, WAF, and DDoS mitigation
- FlyWP / Docker for containerised server management
- Custom plugin development for operational workflow improvements
- Open-Meteo weather and marine API integration for a branded weather widget surfacing real-time wind and sea conditions directly on the site – a genuinely useful tool for the target audience
Results
A storefront that looks and feels like it belongs in the same world as the top kitesurfing brands it sells – fast, clean, and built to last. The infrastructure is solid enough to absorb traffic spikes and bot attacks without going down, and the design system means future updates stay consistent without needing to reinvent the wheel each time.

I recently worked on redesigning and rebranding Fremen Presets with Bricks Builder. Fremen Presets is an e-commerce website selling digital guitar modeling presets and profiles. The target audience is mainly guitarists.
What may seem like a very simple design is actually a strategy developed from months of A/B testing and conversion tracking.
One of the main goals was to make digital profiles easier for non-technical computer users to purchase. Fremen Presets is proof that nothing beats off-page SEO and that building organic reach is the king of longevity. It took a lot of hard work to build it up, but there is no success without hard work.

https://sok.yandesign.be/I’m currently working on redesigning this website with Bricks Builder. It’s still work in progress, but you can preview the new design here:

Son of Kite is one of the first Kite Surf schools in Mauritius. They are also considered one of the best in Mauritius.
The site was originally created with Joomla many years ago. When it came time to update the website we decided to port everything to wordpress.
This was not an easy task at all since the website had been running for over 10 years and they had very good SEO. And the fact that the site is bilingual in English and French didn’t really make the conversion easier.
I needed to make sure the redesign had no negative impact on organic reach.

I was contacted by the client to make some updates to their website.
While auditing the website before accepting the contract, I realized that the website was using a bunch of proprietary plugins and unfortunately the licenses were not renewed for them.
After talking to the client, she decided to do a redesign and swap out all the proprietary plugins for open source and free counterparts. Unfortunately since the Covid pandemic, many small businesses have been forced to cut costs in order to survive.
The redesign was carefully designed to meet the client’s budget while adding the necessary features to boost conversion and increase sales.
After the redesign, sales increased by 600% and subscriptions by 700%.
Since then, the client has subscribed to my maintenance/upkeep plan to ensure everything remains up to date and optimized.

This project was completed in a record time of 3 weeks from start to finish before launching the first women’s golf tournament in Mauritius.
It was such a success that all the tickets were sold out within a few days.
Here I have integrated forms that automatically save all the details into a google sheet so that the association can continue to collaborate with its members on google sheets as it has done for years.
The hardest part was building the website around the tools they were used to and allowing them to maintain the same workflow as before.
Part of my daily challenge is integrating the tools and services my clients already use so that their websites help them improve their business every day. This is much easier said than done, but it’s the only way things will work and become a successful venture.
